Hundreds Arrested in Illinois Prostitution Sting

A nationwide operation to reduce sex-trafficking concluded last month, resulting in the arrest of nearly 600 would-be buyers, or “johns,” and promoters of prostitution. The sting was coordinated by Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, and utilized the cooperation of nearly 40 law enforcement agencies across 17 states.

The so-called “National Day of Johns Arrests” effort began in mid-January and concluded on February 1, coinciding with Super Bowl Sunday, a connection emphasized by Sheriff Dart. “It’s particularly meaningful that this sting culminated on the day of the Super Bowl, which unfortunately has emerged as a prominent haven for sex-trafficking,” he said. While the timing may be attention-grabbing, prostitution and sex-trafficking remain a problem year-round for many communities.

In all, 570 individuals, including 19 in Lake County, were arrested for soliciting prostitution, more than 70 percent of whom responded to phony escort ads placed by law enforcement officials on several websites. An additional 23 arrests were made of suspects facing charges related to the promoting or trafficking of prostitution. The focus of the operation, however, was the would-be buyers. “If there were no johns, there would be no prostitution,” Dart said. “It’s not a victimless crime and johns need to be held responsible for their role in exacerbating the sex trade.” Officials were also pleased to announce almost 70 victims, including 14 juveniles were “rescued” from the sex-trade as a result of the sting.
